What is CDL Class A License?

A CDL Class A (Commercial Driver’s License – Class A) is the most comprehensive commercial license available in the United States. It authorizes drivers to operate a combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided that the vehicle being towed weighs more than 10,000 pounds. This license is essential for individuals pursuing a career in long-haul trucking, freight transport, or any job that requires driving large combination vehicles.

What You Can Drive with a Class A CDL:

A Class A CDL allows you to operate a wide range of commercial vehicles, including:

  • Tractor-trailers (18-wheelers, semi-trucks)

  • Flatbed trucks

  • Tanker vehicles

  • Livestock carriers

  • Truck and trailer combinations

  • With the right endorsements, you may also drive double/triple trailers, hazardous materials (HazMat) vehicles, and tankers.

Why Get a Class A CDL?

A Class A CDL opens the door to high-demand, high-paying careers in the trucking and logistics industry. It allows for greater flexibility in the types of jobs you can qualify for, and many companies offer sign-on bonuses, benefits, and long-term career growth for Class A drivers.

Requirements for a Class A CDL:

To obtain a Class A CDL, applicants must:

  • Be at least 21 years old for interstate driving (18 for intrastate)

  • Hold a valid non-commercial driver’s license

  • Pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam

  • Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from an FMCSA-approved provider

  • Pass written knowledge tests and a skills/road test
